The idea for “Can’t Get Your Eyes Right” came from a movie where one character said to the other character whose portrait he was painting, “I can’t get your eyes right.”
That phrase is the only thing I remember about the movie. It stuck in my head and the only way to get it out was to turn it into a song.
Painting a portrait is as mysterious to me as building a rocket ship. I simply have no idea how to do it. I am the equivalent of tone deaf when it comes to visual art. The song has nothing on me – apologies to anyone who thought it was a confessional.
This song started as a clunky thing with a funky rhythm and a catchy phrase. But with the help of a very talented guitar player and producer, it turned into this. The sax solo is dazzling and I love doubling it with my vocals.
I think this is a great song for a road trip. Enjoy the ride.
